What it is
Hormonal changes during pregnancy can affect your skin in many ways, including dryness, breakouts, increased sensitivity and darkening of certain areas. Because every pregnancy is different, the most important step is to review your skincare with your physician or obstetric provider before starting or continuing any product. This collection is intentionally conservative and is not a guarantee that a product is right for you. In general, a pregnancy routine is simple. Cleanse gently, moisturize to support comfort, and wear a broad-spectrum mineral sunscreen every day, since skin may be more prone to uneven tone. Many providers recommend avoiding retinoids, including retinol, during pregnancy and while breastfeeding, and some advise caution with high-strength salicylic acid, hydroquinone and certain essential oils. Ask your provider about any active ingredient, as well as about oral supplements. Ingredients often discussed as gentler options: zinc oxide and titanium dioxide in mineral sunscreens; hyaluronic acid and glycerin for hydration; ceramides for barrier support; and fragrance-free formulas. Bring the full ingredient list to your appointment so your provider can review it. Your physician has the final word.
