What it is
After professional treatments such as peels, laser, microneedling or injectables, skin is often more sensitive, dry or reactive for a period of time. The right aftercare helps keep it comfortable and protected while it recovers. Your provider's instructions always come first, including when to restart products and which ones to avoid. In general, post-procedure routines are minimal. Cleanse gently with lukewarm water and a mild cleanser, mist or apply soothing products, and use a protective, restorative moisturizer to support the barrier. Sun protection is essential: avoid direct sun, wear a hat and apply a gentle mineral sunscreen once your provider approves. Pause retinoids, exfoliating acids, scrubs and other strong actives until you are cleared to resume them. Don't pick or peel flaking skin. Key ingredients to look for: thermal spring water and panthenol to soothe; ceramides and other lipids to support the barrier; hyaluronic acid and glycerin for hydration; peptides found in recovery-focused formulas; and zinc oxide in mineral sunscreens. If you notice signs that concern you, contact your provider right away. Always patch test new products and follow the directions on each label.
