Understanding Hydration

What it is

Dry and dehydrated skin are related but different. Dry skin lacks oil and often feels rough or flaky, while dehydrated skin lacks water and can look dull or feel tight, even if it is oily. Weather, hot showers, harsh cleansers and over-exfoliating can all weaken the skin barrier and make dryness worse. A hydrating routine focuses on gentle cleansing and layering moisture. Cleanse with a mild, non-stripping cleanser and lukewarm water. While skin is still slightly damp, apply a hydrating serum, then seal it in with a moisturizer. Each morning, finish with a broad-spectrum sunscreen; a hydrating or tinted formula can double as a moisturizing step. At night, a richer cream helps support the barrier. Limit exfoliation to once or twice a week if skin feels tight. Key ingredients to look for: hyaluronic acid and glycerin (humectants that draw in water); ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids (lipids that support the barrier); squalane and other emollients for softness; urea for rough, dry areas like feet and elbows; and soothing ingredients like panthenol. Always patch test new products and follow the directions on each label.
