Understanding Anti-Aging

What it is

Visible skin aging, such as fine lines, wrinkles, loss of firmness and dullness, comes from a mix of natural aging and daily exposure to sun and environmental stress. Sun exposure is one of the biggest contributors, which is why daily sunscreen is an essential anti-aging step. A strong routine is simple and consistent. In the morning, cleanse, apply an antioxidant serum such as vitamin C, moisturize and finish with a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher. In the evening, cleanse and use a retinoid or exfoliating treatment, followed by moisturizer. Introduce retinol slowly, two or three nights a week, and increase as your skin tolerates it. Don't forget the neck, chest and lips. Key ingredients to look for: vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid) and other antioxidants for a brighter, more even look; retinol and retinoids for smoother-looking texture; peptides for the look of firmness; alpha hydroxy acids like glycolic acid for gentle exfoliation; hyaluronic acid for hydration; and mineral or broad-spectrum sunscreen every day. If you are pregnant or nursing, check with your physician before using retinoids. Always patch test new products and follow the directions on each label.
