What it is
Acne-prone skin tends to produce more oil and is prone to clogged pores, which can show up as blackheads, bumps and blemishes. Hormones, genetics, stress and some products can all play a role. Persistent, painful or widespread breakouts should be evaluated by a dermatologist, who can recommend the right treatment for you. For everyday care, a gentle, consistent routine works best. Cleanse twice daily with a clarifying cleanser and avoid harsh scrubbing, which can irritate skin. Add an exfoliating step a few times a week to help keep pores clear, then apply a lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturizer: skipping moisturizer can leave skin feeling tight and oily. Finish each morning with an oil-free, broad-spectrum sunscreen. A clay mask once or twice a week can help absorb excess oil. Key ingredients to look for: salicylic acid (a beta hydroxy acid) to exfoliate inside the pore; glycolic and other alpha hydroxy acids for surface exfoliation; clay to absorb oil; niacinamide for a balanced look; and lightweight antioxidants. Introduce one active product at a time. Always patch test new products and follow the directions on each label.
