What is oily skin?

Oily skin makes more natural oil, called sebum, than other skin types. It often looks shiny by midday, especially on the forehead, nose and chin, and pores may look more visible.

Understanding oily skin

What it is

Oily skin produces more sebum, the natural oil that keeps skin supple. Extra sebum can make skin look shiny, especially across the forehead, nose and chin, and pores may appear larger. Genetics, hormones, humidity and heat all play a role. Oily skin can still feel dehydrated, so the aim is balance, not removing every trace of oil. In the morning, cleanse with a gentle cleanser, apply a lightweight hydrating serum or gel moisturizer and finish with a broad-spectrum sunscreen that feels light on the skin. In the evening, cleanse thoroughly to remove sunscreen, makeup and buildup, then use a light moisturizer. Once or twice a week, a clay mask or gentle exfoliant can help skin look clearer and more refined. Avoid scrubbing hard or over-washing, which can leave skin feeling irritated. Key ingredients to look for include clay and charcoal, which help absorb excess oil on the surface; salicylic acid and fruit enzymes, which gently exfoliate; niacinamide, which helps skin look more even; and hyaluronic acid for oil-free hydration. Look for products labeled non-comedogenic or oil-free. If you have frequent breakouts, see our acne collection.

Questions

Oily skin: your questions

Does oily skin need moisturizer?

Yes. A lightweight, oil-free moisturizer helps keep skin hydrated and comfortable without feeling heavy.

How often should I use a clay mask?

Once or twice a week suits many people. Follow the directions on the product.

Will washing more often reduce shine?

Over-washing can leave skin feeling stripped. Cleansing morning and night is usually enough.

What sunscreen works for oily skin?

Look for lightweight, non-comedogenic, broad-spectrum formulas that feel comfortable under makeup.
