What is dry skin?

Dry skin makes less natural oil than other skin types, so it can feel tight, look dull or flake, especially after cleansing or in cold, low-humidity weather.

Understanding dry skin

What it is

Dry skin produces less sebum, the natural oil that helps hold moisture in the outer layer of the skin. As a result, it may feel tight, look dull, show fine flakes or feel rough to the touch. Weather, hot showers, harsh cleansers and age can all make dryness more noticeable. A dry-skin routine focuses on keeping moisture in and avoiding steps that strip it away. In the morning, rinse with lukewarm water or a gentle, non-foaming cleanser, apply a hydrating serum to slightly damp skin, follow with a moisturizer and finish with a broad-spectrum sunscreen. In the evening, cleanse gently, repeat your serum and use a richer cream to seal in hydration overnight. Exfoliate only occasionally and gently, since over-exfoliating can leave dry skin feeling more uncomfortable. Key ingredients to look for include hyaluronic acid and glycerin, which attract water; ceramides and fatty acids, which support the skin barrier; and soothing ingredients such as panthenol and thermal spring water. Rich textures like creams and balms tend to feel more comfortable than gels. If dryness is severe, painful or itchy, check in with a dermatologist.

Questions

Dry skin: your questions

How do I know if I have dry skin?

Dry skin often feels tight after cleansing, can look dull or flaky and rarely looks shiny during the day.

Should I use a foaming cleanser?

Many people with dry skin prefer gentle, non-foaming cleansers or micellar water, which can feel less stripping.

When should I apply hyaluronic acid?

Apply it to slightly damp skin and follow with a moisturizer to help hold in hydration.

Do I still need sunscreen if my skin is dry?

Yes. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen every day; many tinted and mineral formulas also feel moisturizing.
